Container freight volumes fell in December

According to the latest data from Container Trade Statistics(CTS), the total volume of containers dropped 0.7% in December compared with the same month in 2020, the fourth consecutive monthly decline. However, the intense pressure on the global supply chain looks unlikely to abate any time soon, with shortages of container ships and equipment set to cause congestion at ports around the world or record delays on container routes.Lars Jensen, an analyst at Vespucci Maritime, noted that in 2021, global demand was 6.5 percent higher than in 2020 and 5.3 percent higher than in 2019, adding that this was not an excessive increase in demand.Instead, the challenge lies elsewhere.”So the problem with the supply chain is not global demand, it’s a distortion of high growth, and we’re seeing super strong import growth in North America, but most of the rest of the world is either slow growth, weak growth, or outright decline.”
